| Broadband Migration Woes |

Yesterday BT announced they will start charging ISPs in May '07 if they do not use the voluntary MAC numbers to allow customers to migrate over to a new provider. This is excellent news, because we all know those low quality ISPs like to hold their customers hostage by not supplying MAC numbers and making it difficult to move to a new ISP. Lo and behold, first off the moan-block is Tiscali, who said its "unfair". Well, Tiscali, conveniently forgets that making it difficult for customers to migrate to another provider is unfair, especially when they have frequent outages easily lasting a week, without providing any information about what is causing the problems, when it will be fixed, etc. Tiscali is also one of those providers you need to threaten before they will generate a MAC number and allow you to move. I think its about time ISPs learn to provide a decent service to encourage their users to stay, rather than trying to hold them hostage. Hopefully Ofcom will soon make it compulsory for all ISPs to use MAC numbers to allow customers to migrate.
